Parama Ekadashi: The Sacred Kamala Fast of the Adhika Masa 🕉️🌸

First of all, Hi all 👋

Fasting on Ekadashi is one of the most revered spiritual practices in Sanatana Dharma. However, when an Adhika Masa (the intercalary leap month) occurs, the Ekadashis within it carry extraordinary merit. Today, we delve into the sacred Parama Ekadashi (also known as Kamala Ekadashi), which falls during the waning phase (Krishna Paksha) of the Adhika Jyeshtha month.

🌟 The Significance of Parama Ekadashi

Parama Ekadashi is unique because it only occurs once every three years during the Adhika Masa (also known as the Purushottama Masa, the month dedicated to Lord Vishnu).

Why is it Observed?

According to our scriptures, fasting on this holy day holds the key to:

  • Eradicating Poverty: Clearing the bad karma of past lives that manifests as material distress and financial suffering in this life.
  • Fulfilling Righteous Desires: Gaining the grace of Goddess Lakshmi (hence the name Kamala Ekadashi).
  • Attaining Liberation (Moksha): Pleasing Lord Vishnu in His Purushottama form to break the cycle of birth and death.

📖 Key Scriptural Stories

The Puranas contain two profound stories illustrating the transformative power of this vrata.

1. The Story of the Devoted Couple (From the Bhavishyottara Purana)

In the ancient city of Kampilya, there lived a pious Brahmin named Sumedha and his virtuous wife, Pavitra. Although Sumedha was deeply knowledgeable in the Vedas, the couple suffered from crippling poverty. They barely had enough food to eat or clothes to wear.

Despite their dire circumstances, Pavitra was a model of hospitality. Whenever a guest arrived at their humble doorstep, she would serve them whatever little food they had, staying hungry herself while completely hiding her distress behind a warm smile.

Heartbroken at seeing his beautiful wife suffer, Sumedha suggested leaving the town to seek fortune or beg elsewhere. Pavitra stopped him with profound words of wisdom on Karma Siddhanta:

"My dear husband, wealth is strictly the fruit of past charity. If we did not sow seeds of donation in our past lives, we will not reap wealth in this life, even if we climb to the peak of the golden Mount Meru. Our destiny is already written by Lord Brahma. Let us stay here, stay righteous, and trust in the Lord."

Shortly after, the great Sage Kaundinya visited their home. Sumedha and Pavitra welcomed him with supreme devotion. Moved by their pure hearts and hospitality, the sage gave them a spiritual solution to end their poverty: he advised them to observe the Parama Ekadashi Vrata during the Adhika Masa. Sumedha and Pavitra followed his guidance with deep faith. As the vrata concluded, the negative karmic blockages dissolved, and they were blessed with abundance, peace, and ultimate liberation.

2. The Redemption of Jayasharma (From the Padma Purana)

The Padma Purana highlights the day as Kamala Ekadashi because it invites the direct grace of Goddess Lakshmi (Kamala).

In the city of Avanti, a respected Brahmin named Shivasharma had five sons. His youngest, Jayasharma, turned to a life of wickedness and fell into bad habits. Having depleted his family’s patience, he was banished from home.

Jayasharma wandered aimlessly across the land, suffering intensely from hunger and thirst. His spiritual merit eventually drew him to the sacred Triveni Sangama in Prayagraj. There, he entered the ashram of Sage Harimitra, where the resident sages were discussing the glory of the upcoming Kamala Ekadashi of the Adhika Masa.

Jayasharma repented for his sins. He joined the sages in observing a strict fast and staying awake the entire night (Jagaran). The absolute purity of the fast dissolved the dark layers of his negative karma. Pleased by his devotion, Goddess Lakshmi herself appeared before him, bringing blessings of eternal prosperity to his lineage. She taught him that just as Garuda is the king of birds and the Ganga is the holiest of rivers, the pure Ekadashi (free from the shadow of Dashami) is the supreme among all days.

🪔 Vrata Vidhana: How to Observe the Fast

To gain the full physical and spiritual benefits of Parama Ekadashi, standard rituals should be followed:

  1. Fasting & Vigil (Jagaran): Devotees observe a complete fast. The night is spent in Jagaran—staying awake while singing bhajans, dancing, and listening to scriptural stories of Lord Hari.
  2. Worship of Purushottama: Lord Vishnu is worshipped in His Purushottama form.
  3. Dwadashi Parna & Charity: On the next morning (Dwadashi), it is highly auspicious to bathe the deity in pure milk (Payas-snana), which is said to lead the devotee to Vaikuntha. Offer food and charity to righteous Brahmins before breaking the fast.

💡 The Spiritual Takeaway: Surrendering the Ego

At its core, Parama Ekadashi teaches us humility and self-awareness. During this fast, devotees traditionally recite the Jitante Stotra, which is a prayer of total surrender.

Instead of proudly assuming we can command our destiny or that we worship perfectly, we acknowledge our flaws, our limited intellect (durbuddhi), and declare that our ultimate refuge is the grace of Lord Narayana. True wealth is not just gold or coins, but a mind anchored in spiritual peace.

🙏 ಶ್ರೀ ಕೃಷ್ಣಾರ್ಪಣಮಸ್ತು.
Dedicated to the glory of Sri Hari and Vayu Devaru. 🚩
